Why it sucks to be a rapper

Published by Ryan Edmunds at 7:27 am under Features Edit This

Lets be honest, rock music has always been better than rap music. There have only been a few succesful crossovers (Body Count or Rage Against the Machine). Rock will always have the best musicians, the best fanbase (and the best groupies). Mohib of Mind Power Blog and I put together this list which proves why it sucks to be a rapper and why it rocks to be a rocker.

Oh…and Freddie Mercury may have sung about fat bottom women, but he really liked fat bottom men.

  5. Uh huhon 18 Feb 2009 at 11:22 am edit this

T.C., Fat Bottom Girls was written by Brian May and not Freddie Mercury… That’s why he was singing about women.

Very funny, but very true. Rappers sometimes don’t have good success when it comes to being a rapper, but I know one thing and that is that rockers have lots of good success when it comes to being a rockers. What I think about this comparison is that rockers, they have got some sense when they do what they do, but rappers, they sometimes take it too far and their careers end up being a bust.

  7. Terrible Comparisonon 18 Feb 2009 at 6:44 pm edit this

Regardless of who wrote Fat Bottom girls, this is not a good list. If the list was something more in the lines of “Why Rockers are better musicians than rapper” and then backed up with a good argument and not comparisons that contradict each other and look hypocritical, then maybe it would have substance.

Again, you failed from the beginning. First by throwing Al Green in with rappers and then calling him the “Definition Of Lousiness”.

“Rockers” use drugs because they want to get high and nothing more…sometimes write music in the process.

  8. Emilyon 18 Feb 2009 at 10:39 pm edit this

Mr Fucking Terrible Comparison. Go study some music history. Are you a freak? Who is comparing Al Green to Eminem? Al Green is however compared to Mick Jagger.

Secondly, Soul (and R&B) music has a great influence on Rap and Hip Hop. Nu soul, for example, combined hip hop and soul music and produced some major subgenres of rap music. The influence of soul, funk, and disco can be clearly discerned in rap, particularly its early articulations. Soul’s impact was evident not only musically but also in terms of thematic content, particularly its concern with social issues and black pride. So fucking shut your mouth. Al Green is a great soul/ gospel/ R&B singer and a clear influence on today’s hip hop scene. Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown cites Al Green as an influence.

Thirdly, this list is done just for fucking fun. Okay, Freddie was a gay but he was one the greatest singer of all time in any genre.

Can a rap singer ever sing an opera? Haha. They fuckin can not sing Ave Maria on Christmas. So, they make it 1-2-3…. Maria and Jesus climbing the tree.

Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice, a prominent rap artist, was straight plagiarized from Under Pressure by Queen & David Bowie. Rappers frequently rip off rock music and make it sound like shit.

  9. Jessicaon 18 Feb 2009 at 10:51 pm edit this

Great points Emily. Terrible Comparison is a retard! Al Green had head lice…. seriously haha. Awesome stuff here.

  10. Terrible Comparisonon 19 Feb 2009 at 8:59 am edit this

First of all, “Emily” (no doubt Jessica is the same person) This list wasn’t “Why it sucks to be a soul singer that influenced rappers” it’s “why it sucks to be a rapper”. Which I’m sure if you actually asked a rapper they would tell you that it doesn’t suck to be them. Blues influenced rap too, so let’s take a shot at B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.

Vanilla Ice ripped off a song…how many chords and songs have been ripped off in rock over the years too? Once again, contradicting arguments.

Yes, Freddie was an amazing singer, I could care less what his sexual preference was, but that’s not my point. I’m not a rap fan, but a “Fun” list or not, it is a stupid list and makes rock stars and fans look ignorant and immature. How about “Why it sucks to think you know a lot about music, but really don’t”.

Al Green had head lice…what does that have to do with music or anything else for that matter. Grow up and enjoy the music YOU listen to instead criticizing the music that others listen to. Music takes many beautiful forms. Don’t try trashing an entire genre because it’s not what you like. Believe it or not, even Pop music has it’s fair share of real talent.

  11. Emilyon 20 Feb 2009 at 5:58 am edit this

Al Green is here because many rappers have ACTUALLY cited him as an influence.

Secondly, rap, every single song of this genre, is based on the same drum beat. All rap songs sound alike. Often, listeners of rap identify the quality of a rap “song” by how “phat” its beat is, or something like that.

You’re the biggest looser if you think Rap is music and is arrrrrrgh beautiful…. a big suckup!!!

  12. Samon 20 Feb 2009 at 7:23 am edit this

Rap is usually hated by rich white people who don’t even know what poverty is. I must say to most of you rock fans, black rap fans almost never say anything about rock. Okay we are poor black people and love rap music. If rap is crap we still love it and even if we are niggers and live in ghettos, we still have every right to love our music.

  13. Terrible Comparisonon 20 Feb 2009 at 9:56 am edit this

One day you guy(s) will grow up and just appreciate music for what it’s worth and stop learning your music history from Wikipedia.

  14. Emilyon 20 Feb 2009 at 10:33 am edit this

Oh really…. So, you are bashing the Wikipedia now? Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world, can write anything they want about any subject. So you know you are getting the best possible information. Stop being such a loser!

  15. TCon 20 Feb 2009 at 2:30 pm edit this

HA! that’s right. Anyone can write anything…but how true is all the information you’re getting? Wiki is a great reference to draw SOME information from, but not all of it. Anyone can edit it, so it has it’s flaws. Wikipedia is great, but if you think you can learn everything about music by merely reading about it online, then you are the loser.

Al Green is here because someone fucked up and then tries to use the excuse that he was an influence on Rap, which he may be an influence on rappers but he’s also an influence on some rock too. Listen to some Al Green some time. Listen to some Marvin Gaye some time. Listen to some Otis Redding sometime. Open your mind and shut your mouth once in awhile and you might learn something.

I’m also not as stupid as you may think I am, “Emily”. I’m done with this.

  16. ryanedmundson 20 Feb 2009 at 7:33 pm edit this

    I love Otis Redding.

  17. Emilyon 20 Feb 2009 at 11:10 pm edit this

You’re a chicken ass…. do not expose your name.
You’re a buffoon………. do not understand the significance and functionality of Wikipedia (nobody’s saying that we can learn everything about music from Wiki; even Bible has its own flaws).
You’re a dickhead because I’ve already told you that I respect Al Green, Marvin Gaye, B.B King etc etc.

    Get a life!

If you watch the following music video you will surely be convinced that rap music is art and nothing else. Enjoy.

I thought it was pretty obviously a joke. Timmo’ you aren’t the first person to find this racist. I don’t really understand what is racist about poking fun at a genre of music.

  21. Emilyon 11 Mar 2009 at 6:15 am edit this

Timmo… What a dumbass you’re! You think Dr. Dre is not relevant in today’s hip hop scene. Rappers are cunning enough to dump their legends.

  22. Andyon 11 Mar 2009 at 4:23 pm edit this

Dre is the legendary and most successful of all times; like About.com ranked Dr. Dre #2 (tied with Pete Rock) on their “Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers” list. More than any other rapper, Dr. Dre was responsible for moving away from the avant-noise and political stance of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions as well as the party vibes of old-school rap. So, needless to say, one of the most well-know rapper…

Oh yeah! Al Green (with all due respect to the fantastic soul singer), Eminem and Dr. Dre themselves dissed rap too. Here are the links:

    5CThe-MAJORITY-Of-Modern-Rap-Music-Is-Crap

Key is right there mate, the MAJORTY of all music is crap, by virtue of it being made by anyone with a laptop, the fact that rap music is easier to make with a laptop means there is more crap rap music, but on the flipside you cant make amazing rock music with a laptop, you CAN make amazing rap music with a laptop, right tools for the right job, with with right people in charge. Anyone who wants to engage in the “rap vs metal” or any other petty argument needs to really look at why, just because I dislike the music you enjoy its not a personal attack, im not going to call it rubbish, im just not going to listen to it. Anyway check the jay/linkin park thing, that shit was HEAVY, i say was…cos its a bit old not…and on some 14 year old ish…over and out.

  26. Emilyon 14 Mar 2009 at 4:33 pm edit this

Linkin Park and Jay-Z is heavy? Are you insane?

  27. Leroy jenkinson 07 Apr 2009 at 3:04 pm edit this

WAS heavy. Cant you read? Shame.

  28. Ryan Edmundson 08 Apr 2009 at 7:58 am edit this

I suppose compared to most rap music out there.. it could have been considered heavy in some way.. but did you ever listen to body count? That was actually both old and heavy. And better than anything Linkin Park or Jay-Z could ever do.

  29. Emilyon 09 Apr 2009 at 12:47 pm edit this

Rappers have 1 mg balls. They could NOT be heavy you fag!

  30. Emilyon 09 Apr 2009 at 12:57 pm edit this

Do you even know what makes music heavy? Highly amplified distortion. Kickass basslines. Emphatic beats. Linkin Crap and Jay-pee posses none of these skills, so they can just use overall loudness with some hi-fi sound system. Faggots…

  31. Ryan Edmundson 25 Jun 2009 at 11:21 am edit this

Ya… one man’s catchphrase makes up the entire chorus of one of Usher’s biggest hits: Yeah!
I was like “Yeah!” .. great lyrical content.

You’re trying to joke with this, but then again you’re kinda serious.
I got one question, Why have corny white square rockers been throwing this BS us for 30 years now? Are you that insecure about a method to make music that didn’t require instruments? Have Hip Hop
and R&B fans wasted 30 years trying to discredit rock? No, we went about the business of making and enjoying OUR music. The fact that white trash rockers whose worldview doesn’t extend much past Whitesnake and other such drivel, don’t respect us has really never mattered.
To seriously (whoever that is), asterisks or not, you’re just posting uninformed racist BS, an utter waste of pixels.
And to Ryan, or whoever posted this nonsense, you don’t deserve to enjoy music if you would use Al Green as a barometer of lousiness.
It’s amazing how you chip on the shoulder rockers forget all your heroes
are middle class white dudes who have been mimicking black musicians for well over 50 years. I think part of the reason you forget is that the white musicians so quickly removed the true grit, soul and funk from the music, it soon seemed like some cool new novelty that was exclusive to white folks.
And don’t feed me the ‘But I like Hendrix ‘line, you people are just clowns.

  34. Andyon 11 Aug 2009 at 3:21 pm edit this

    @ Jamie

    >>Why have corny white square rockers been throwing this BS us for 30 years now? Are you that insecure about a method to make music that didn’t require instruments?

Nu Soul, RAP, Hip Hop is Noise, NOT music.

    >>And to Ryan, or whoever posted this nonsense, you don’t deserve to enjoy music if you would use Al Green as a barometer of lousiness.

Al Green had head-lice. Read his biography. (I just a reader here and I enjoyed the post very much).

Mimicking Blacks??? Wtf! Blacks did not invent music. If its the case, early bluesmen ripped off Medieval Arabic and folk musicians. Read some history…. Also, some researchers say that Muslims invented the blues….

  35. Mohibon 11 Aug 2009 at 3:33 pm edit this

@ Andy- I know that “the guitar was introduced into Europe by the Islamic Moors. I was told that the Guitar evolved from the Arab lute; they added two strings and the guitar was born. Persians think that the guitar was their invention which was stolen by the Arabs”.

  36. GSGon 16 Nov 2009 at 8:56 pm edit this

What the hell is wrong with you people? Why is it that rock and rap are even in comparison? You can’t say one’s better than the other, people have different tastes, musicians have different emotions to convey and each do it in their own ways. I for one am a major classic rock/blues fan, but still respect some rappers who actually made an effort to write something decent and original where you actually feel them through their music(examples: Tupac, Ice cube, Biggie, DJ Quik). Granted soe rappers I wish never existed many reasons (Lil’ John and Rihanna fo shameless ripping off of music, Soulja Boy for not using actually words in his “music”) but then again, some rock bands aren’t any better (in my opinion anyway).

And since when does color define what music you have to play or listen to? Granted alot of blues guitarists were african-american but that doesn’t mean Clapton or Jimmy Page or Joe Bonamassa are stealing anything, they were just influenced most and they feel blues is the style that best conveys their emotions. Cuz in that case, as an Arab, I’d have to give up playing Bass cuz its not a native instrument and has no place in our music.

By the way, success and making music are 2 completely different things. Being a great band/artist and making great music has nothing to do with making money. Michael Schenker is one of the greatest guitarists I have ever had the honour of listening to, but has had a lot of ups and downs in his career, so crap career but the man’s skill and talent is amazing.

To sum up, grow the hell up, listen to whatever you like and mind your own business. For the reasonable ones out there, way to stay sane in the madness, guys.
