Sungha Jung - Guitar Prodigy

sungha jungThe 11 year old classical fingerstyle guitarist from South Koreo whose guitar is nearly as big as he is. Sungha Jung says its’ his dream to become a professional fingerstyle guitarist. Seems like he’s already gotten there to me.

Sungha had been watching his Dad play the guitar for a while before deciding to pick one up himself, only a few short years ago. When he is not in school, Sungha can be found practicing for up to three hours a day. Sungha uses a custom guitar to fit his body size body, on it, Thomas Leeb wrote “Keep on grooving to my friend.”

He says it usually takes him about 3 days to learn, practice and then videotape a new song, which he then uploads to his Youtube profile. More difficult peices can take him up to a week. He says he started off by learning music by-ear from the videos he watched online but has recently started using tabs that are available from the authors.

On his page you can find his renditions of artists like Elton John, The Beatles, Nirvana, Bon Jovi and many others. Its hard to say where he will be in ten years if he keeps at this rate, but it is obvious he has a natural talent is destined for greatness. There’s no telling how far his skills can take him.

It is really inspiring to watch this young master at work. Lets put it this way, I’ve been playing guitar for almost as long as he has been alive and cannot compete.

Here he is playing ‘More Than Words’

Kiss from a Rose - Seal

And a rendition of ‘Tears in Heaven’ that I think might make Eric Clapton’s jaw drop

Sungha even has his own interpretations of songs as composed and arranged by fellow Youtube star, Andy McKee.

The Devil in Music - Diabolis in musica

Published by Ryan Edmunds under Features Edit This

Slayer album cover for God Hates Us AllWhen you think of satanic music you probably think about shock groups like Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson or some heavy metal band like Slayer (Guitarist Kerry King has 666 tattooed on his head). In fact, these artists have little or nothing to do with the traditional Satan. Manson himself, an honorary Reverend for the Church of Satan founded by Anton Lavey, has explained that modern Satanism is a faith based on self love and self worship in which there is no God or Devil.

In a 1995 interview in Washington D.C. Manson was asked if Satan existed and said “I think Satan is a word that you can use to describe your animalistic side if, as a whole, everyone’s animalistic nature - I guess Satan exists in that sense - that part of everyone’s personality. I don’t believe in it as a “being”. It’s a word that represents rebellion, represents Man, represents a defiance towards society and God and the things that are forced upon us and are considered to be normal and acceptable.”

What you probably don’t think about when you think of satanic music is a traditional delta blues artist who influenced the likes of Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, The Rolling Stones and many other classic artists.

Robert Johnson is a blues legend from the early 1900’s who was said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his incredible musical ability. When Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones heard Robert Johnson for the first time he asked “Who is the guy playing the other guitar?”

Richards did not realize there was only Johnson playing a single guitar on the track. During the time that he was alive it was documented that, when he would play, the combination of his virtuostic guitar ability, wailing vocals and rhythmic foot tapping created the auditory illusion that an entire band was performing.

The 2000 film “O’ Brother Where Art Thou?” depicts a character named Tommy Johnson who seems to be loosely based on the real life blues singer. In the film the protagonists pick up a hitch-hiker on his way to ’sing into a can’ who claims to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the ability to play the guitar ‘real good’.

The rumours surrounding Johnson are fed by those who knew him, those who played with him and those who taught him to play. It is said that he was an amateur-at-best guitar picker who followed around the intermediate players in his area and was often the subject of jokes from the more skilled musicians. He would unsuccessfully try to mimic what his peers were playing and become frustrated when he couldn’t play as well as they could.

At the time it was widely known that you could sell your soul to the Devil at the crossroads. When Johnson disappeared for mere months and returned with the unholy ability to play anything he heard by ear, it fanned the flames of many stories to come.

There are only two known published photos of Robert Johnson. The photo to the right is perhaps the most famous depicts an exceedingly chilling look in Johnston’s eyes, which was later speculated to be the result of an undiagnosed cataract of the eye.

Another aspect that has kept this rumour going strong was his untimely death at the age of 27.  An unusual number of prominent and successful musicians have died at the age of 27, often at the very peak of their fame. This has led to the birth of the myth of the 27 Club, sometimes known as The Club or forever 27.

Musicians Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison,  Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain all died within 10 months of turning 27. Of these five most famous members of the 27 club, three of the causes of death are still foggy. Although Jim Morrison’s official cause of death was heart failure, no autopsy was performed. Cobain’s suicide is still up for debate. Janis Joplins’ cause of death was a probable heroin overdose but also remains unknown. Robert Johnson’s death is suspected strychnine poisoning, but nobody knows for sure.

There are also several other famous musicians who died, some inexplicably, at 27 years of age. This has lead many to believe that these artists, like the founding Forever 27 member Robert Johnson, also sold their souls to the devil.

In an exclusive interview with Roxie, I gave some advice on getting started with the guitar. We covered everything from the intimidating process of buying your first guitar to where to find a guitar teacher. I even got a chance to share some fond childhood memories of when I was just starting out.

If you’re wondering why I would ever say something like:

-Not everybody has a barn and a Dad who cares enough to lock them in it.

A salute to the funny guitar face

Published by Ryan Edmunds under Features Edit This

Guitar player’s face is a serious medical condition that affects musicians everywhere. Nobody is immuned to guitar player’s face. The symptoms are spastic facial contortions, the constant appearance of either absolute agony or absolute ecstacy. A possible side effect may be constipation.

Some think that this condition is merely an urban legend, but we have documented photographic proof that it exists, and can get to anyone. Even me!

There is very little medical research on the direct cause of guitar player’s face, but with your help we can make sure it doesn’t spread.

“Mommy! Mommy! I want to be a guitarist when I grow up!”

“Now Johnny, you know you can’t do both.”

The kid’s face is absolutely fanstastic.. but its not the only weird thing about this picture. Why is Dad taking off his pants?

Carlos Santana is a master of making it look like it really hurts to play the guitar. This is a well-kept secret of guitar players everywhere. The more we make it look painful, the less people will pick up the guitar and learn to outplay us.

As you can see, Santana has been selling this idea for years. Even before Woodstock he was making us think it hurts.

Still at it, Mr. Santana.

Crop this photo just right and you could win a pulitzer for capturing a live reaction to the 9/11 disaster straight from ground zero.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide if the guitar player is ‘really feeling it’ or just has to go to the bathroom.

Sometimes when there are two guitar players in a band you get mixed emotions.

And sometimes you get the very same emotions out of two guitarists.

Another common misconception about guitar playing is that the more wildly you wave your guitar around while you play, the more wildly you will be playing.

The guitar face: Sometimes, you don’t even need a guitar.

Hey B.B. King, I thought the blues was supposed to be about being sad? You don’t look too blue to me.

This video is Spinal Tap performing “Gimme’ some money” in this clip it is clear that guitar player’s face is contagious. The whole band appears to be suffering. The guitar player’s face during the guitar solo is outstanding.Alright alright, I’ve made enough fun of other musicians and now I suppose its’ my turn. I am not the type of guy who isn’t able to laugh at himself, so here is my guitar face:

and another…

Feel free to insert your own caption in the comments. Show no mercy. I can take it.
