Alternative tunings for the guitar.
Welcome to Guitar Today’s series on Alternate guitar tunings. This is our first ever ongoing series. For the experimental guitarist, using an alternative to standard tuning can help to refresh your creativity on levels you weren’t aware of before. For all other guitar players, it is essential knowledge that helps to expand your grasp on the fretboard and the way chords and harmony operate within the confines of the guitar’s six strings.
Tuning your guitar starts you off with the basics. Tuning your guitar to standard tuning, obtaining your notes and different methods of checking for proper pitch.
Dropped D and Double Dropped D Tunings introduce some lower pitched notes and new chord shapes for you to play around with. Downtuning is highly popular in nu-metal and grunge music.
Open G Tuning introduces even more single finger chord shapes and provides many resources on this unique old school guitar tuning method. It is highly popular in classic rock, folk and blues music and was popularized by the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist, Keith Richards.
More to come! Whenever new articles are added to this series they will also be outlined here. So check back often to see how things shape out in our first of (hopefully) many instructional series.
